CEOs rally business women

A national gathering of women executives heard a clear message Thursday in Laguna Niguel: Don't let anything stand in the way between you and your passion.

A panel of female CEOs urged women to be willing to fight through obstacles, which are bound to emerge. They spoke at the "Executive Women Leading the Way" conference produced by the Executive Women's Network at the Ritz Carlton Laguna Niguel in Dana Point.

Lisa Druxman identified her passion as having a career that was supportive of motherhood. She founded Stroller Strides (strollerstrides.com) and now is CEO of a franchised fitness company with more than 300 locations in 30 states. The 5-year-old company is based in San Diego.

"Don't expect it to be an easy road," Druxman said. "If you're not passionate about what you're doing, you'll get lost along the way.

Cuedoc delay could have killed my diabetic baby

A MILLOM mum has slammed the out-of-hours GP service Cuedoc after her diabetic baby waited more than an hour and a half to be seen. Angela Cummings, 28, of Church Hill Drive, Millom, says the delay could have cost her daughter her life. Mrs Cummings contacted Cuedoc on January 21 after her 14-month-old daughter, Eryn-Lee, became ill. After describing the symptoms to a receptionist over the phone she had to wait 30 minutes for a return phone call by a doctor, then a further hour for a second doctor to come out from Whitehaven. When the doctor finally arrived Eryn-Lee was vomiting violently, breathing rapidly and turning blue. After being rushed to the children's ward in Furness General Hospital, she was stabilised and diagnosed as having type one diabetes. Mrs Cummings describes the service as shoddy and says it is putting Millom people's lives at risk.

Third contender for father of Smith's baby

The husband of actress Zsa Zsa Gabor claims he had a decade-long affair with Anna Nicole Smith and may be her infant daughter's father.

He is third in the queue of men claiming to have fathered five-month-old Dannielynn with Smith, who died last week aged 39. Prince Frederic von Anhalt's claim comes as Smith's former boyfriend Larry Birkhead launches a legal challenge to her most recent partner Howard K Stern being listed on the infant's birth certificate.

A judge has refused to order an emergency DNA test on Smith, but has ordered her body be preserved until a hearing on February 20, lawyers say.

Von Anhalt's claim added a further bizarre chapter to the story of the former Playboy bunny who collapsed and died in Florida on Thursday.

Her mother, Vergie Arthur, told ABC TV: "I think she had too many drugs, just like Danny (Smith's son)."

Danny Smith's death in the Bahamas on December 10 came a few days after his mother gave birth to Dannielynn, who is also reportedly being cared for there.

Escondido man forms city's Minutemen Brigade

ESCONDIDO ---- A newly formed group of anti-illegal immigration protesters has begun rallying at a popular hiring site in the central part of the city with the intent of curbing the hiring of illegal immigrants and decreasing problems they say the immigrants cause.Escondido resident David Cline formed the Escondido Minutemen Brigade ---- an offshoot of the San Diego Minutemen, a prominent anti-illegal immigration group ---- in December, and has since regularly gathered with supporters at a hiring site along Quince Street between Mission and Washington avenues to wave American flags, hand out fliers and answer questions from passers-by.

The Escondido Minutemen work in association with the San Diego Minutemen, a group that in the last year has protested at day-labor sites and promoted legislation that targets illegal immigration.

Free admission to some state museums starts today

People shouldn't have to pay to get a taste of Louisiana history, says Secretary of State Jay Dardenne, so starting today, there's no admission to three "high profile" museums under his office.

Dardenne said Monday he's lifting the admission charge at the Old State Capitol and the Old Arsenal Museum in Baton Rouge and the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum in Shreveport.
